Why I won't go back to Conventional Deodorant.

I've been there, in the grocery store, staring at tubes of mystery ingredients looking for the perfect compilation of fresh, floral, but not quite powdery baby butt scent to perfectly disguise my own personal odor. 'Yeah, spring rain and floral bliss mixed with suffocated body sweat is EXACTLY what I'm looking for!'- Said no one ever.

I looked for alternatives and settled for a pit crystal or natural mists that contain no chemicals, but essential oils? This got me thinking, I can make my own deodorant and make it smell how I want it to!

"But, I have really bad body odor, I have to use the store bought stuff. "

Well guess what, you are supposed to sweat and that smell is your body releasing toxins and natural bacterial making tiny farts in your arm pit. Eww gross bacteria! yeah, yeah, yeah, well guess what, 'powder fresh' doesn't kill them, 'powder fresh' interrupts one of your body's most important self-cleaning cycles.

"Ok, so how are essential oils different and why should I be using them in my arm pits? "

Essential oils are natural and are derived from the plants defenses against bacteria. Plants have figured out what we barely understand today. Essential oils neutralize those stinky bacteria that cause bad body odor. Everyone has their own scent and some peoples natural scent blends well with fresh tones such as cypress, lavender, lime, and clary sage to name a few, while others natural scent blends well with muskier tones such as cardamom, frankincense, myrrh, patchouli, and sandalwood.

"How do I know what will smell good on my body?"

Follow your nose, literally! Think of the scents that you enjoy smelling and that make you feel good. Do you like the smell of the forest, fresh crisp trees, pine, and earth? If so you would lean more towards a scent that is from a tree: douglas fir, cedarwood, white fir, arborvitae. Citrus tones may fall in line with your desired scent along with brighter base tones and herbal tones.

Do you like the smell of the holidays? fire, spices, warm cider, whiskey, chocolate chip cookies? Scents such as clove, cinnamon, vetiver, patchouli, orange, cardamom, and myrrh may be to your liking.

Almost all essential oils contain some type of antibacterial property so most of the little stinky armpit bacteria won't flourish when using a natural deodorant. Incorporating more dark leafy greens (chlorophyll rich vegetables) will aid in gently detoxing stink from your body. Eating less sugar and 'easy carbs' such as bread and pastas will also help in balancing your bodies natural scent. Remember your body is at least 60% water so if you aren't consuming at least 3 liters/quarts a day there is a good possibility that your body is wildly dehydrated which can also concentrate body odor.

The benefits of a natural deodorant:

• Plant based

• Inherently anti-bacterial (stops stink)

• Free of synthetic chemicals

• Aids the body and lymphatic glands in natural detoxification

• Contributes to the body's natural pleasing scent

The downsides to commercial deodorant:

• Synthetic chemicals

• Loaded with aluminum

• Inhibits sweating (you are supposed to sweat)

• Depresses natural pheromone scent (used to attract a mate)

• Increases uptake of chemicals in sensitive lymph-node area (armpit)

The combinations for making your own personal scent are endless. I suggest starting with just one oil, such as sandalwood or lavender then add one more from there until you have found the perfect combination that works with your scent and helps fight off stinky bacteria!

• A great trick is to hold the caps of the oils in your hand and smell just the caps to find a combination that you like, then pour the oils a little at a time until you have the perfect blend.
